The Awkward Comedy Show is a new standup performance documentary spotlighting four alternative African-American comics. It’s a film to showcase a category of black comedian rarely witnessed: the nerd variety.

Awkward comedians Victor Varnado (The Adventures of Pluto Nash, Late Night with Conan O’Brien), Hannibal Buress (The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson), Eric André (HBO’s Aspen Comedy Festival) and Baron Vaughn(Live At Gotham, Cloverfield) bring to their routines the arrogant street-wise swagger of computer programming, Shakespearean drama, and playing the tuba.

Comedian Marina Franklin (Last Comic Standing, Chapelle’s Show, Comedy Central’s Premium Blend, Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn, BBC’s The World Stands Up) serves as interviewer, peering into the minds of the performers in The Awkward Comedy Show. Music is by cutting-edge hip-hop performer Farbeon.

The film offers an off-stage look at the Awkward Comedy Show comedians as well, with behind the scenes footage and interviews, blended with personal vignettes illustrated by underground comic book artists.

These are nerds who don’t need any revenge, just a mic and an audience who cares about smart comedy from a personal perspective. All together, the Awkward Comedy Show will show the world doofy jokesters are to be laughed at on their own terms.
